Social Business: Authentically Building Your Network

Although social business is a simple idea to embrace, it can be hard to execute.

Social media requires a level of personal exposure that is hard to represent in business. Yet, authenticity and transparency are the keys to social business success.

The Three Rules of Thumb from West Point provide the goal posts that I aspire to in my on and offline actions. The rules shape my intended actions and technique.

  1. Does this action attempt to deceive anyone or allow anyone to be deceived?

  2. Does this action gain or allow the gain of a privilege or advantage to which I or someone else would not otherwise be entitled?

  3. Would I be satisfied by the outcome if I were on the receiving end of this action?

My goal in connecting with people is to provide value by deepening our collective network and influence. In adding connections, I try to bring together people who have an innate interest in creating value to one another for the long term, not just the next 1-2 years.

I hope those I look to socially engage and collaborate with find my approach sound. Feedback is always welcome and I encourage the sharing of comments to assist one another grow our individual and collective social identity and influence.

The sum of the parts is stronger and more influential than each of us as individuals – thank you for the camaraderie along the social journey!
