6 LinkedIn Connection Request Templates

The most important thing about building a network on LinkedIn is to be genuine and authentic.

We all interact with people both on and offline throughout the day and building network with people who are legitimately in your day-to-day life will lead to success. Feigning the relevance you have with someone will come across as jarring and likely create more of a barrier to the relationship than facilitating communications. Your intent counts more than your technique.

Armed with the right intent, below are professional, academic and personal LinkedIn connection approaches that I have successfully leveraged to grow my network. You will want to create a salutation like, "Hi John" and close with something like, "Best Regards, Mark."

Professional

  • I enjoyed our conversation at the Forrester Consumer Forum today and thought to send a LinkedIn connection request to deepen our respective networks. Look forward to staying in touch.

  • I see that we share share a passion for social business and have several solid common connections such as Jane Doe from Forrester and Rachel Mezzatesta from Socially Savvy. Thought to send a connection request to deepen our respective networks.

Academic / School

  • Hope all is well with you. Given the West Point '93 connection, I thought to send a LinkedIn request to deepen our respective networks. Look forward to staying in touch.

  • Hope this note finds you well. Given that we share the West Point lineage and common connections in Jane Doe and John Smith (or a passion for social business and technology), I thought to send a LinkedIn request to deepen our respective networks. Look forward to staying in touch.

Personal

  • Last night's MITX Up program was a lot of fun. Having enjoyed meeting and mentoring the team with you at last night, I thought to send a LinkedIn connection request to deepen our respective networks. Look forward to keeping in touch.

  • I enjoyed our discussion (or meeting) this afternoon and thought to send a LinkedIn connection request to deepen our respective networks. Look forward to staying in touch.

Take Aways

  1. Relevance and the right intent are the keys to successful outreach with your network.

  2. Get real about building your network and focus on interactions with people you know, meet and have relationships with.

  3. Set network development goals (X people per day or week) and make it part of your regular routine.
